Magnovox Odyssey 2000 Repair and Modernization

As I dusted off my old Odyssey 2000 (Model BH7510) I found that one of the devils pitchforks, I mean one of the connectors on that evil game switch was broken.   I tried splicing a new connector on it but the signal quality was poor.  I then turned to world wide web (aka Google) for answers.  I know that folks have used simple Radio Shack components to bypass Atari's evil TV/Game switch the Odyssey series uses this unique video cable which makes that impossible.  Enter Ozyr's Emporium and the solution to this problem.  On this page it shows that this Magnavox video cable can be replaced with a standard RCA video cable on an Odyssey 2.  Well if it works on an Odyssey 2 maybe it will work on the 2000 unit?

To find out we popped that Odyssey 2000 on the operating table and behold!  Under a ton solder was the video connector that appeared a lot like a standard RCA cable.  We replaced the cable but now we still need a slightly more modern answer to the evil TV/Game switch.  For that we turned to Radio Shack's successor, eBay.  Shown in the picture is a RCA to COAX adapter that runs for less than five US bucks.   This same simple cheat come be used on other systems of its time like the Atari 2600/7800 and the Coleco.

After re-assembly I now have the clearest and sharpest image I have every seen come out of this Magnavox Odyssey 2000.  Of course this carries video signal only since the internal speaker handles all the beeps and boops of pong.

Blinking Light Win NES Mod

Greetings programs!  It's been two years and I've all but disappeared.  Life has a funny way of veering off course and bringing you right around again.  So in the spirit of resuscitation (like this new post on an old blog) lets talk about the holder of the original red light of death, The Nintendo Entertainment System.

 When blowing the NES carts doesn't work anymore there's only a few things you can do.  You could clean and bend 72 pins or replace them altogether.  I've done both and neither is a permanent solution.  I fact my 2nd new 72 pin connector is failing/failed.  Fear not though, for a new contender has arisen...The Blinking Light Win Nintendo Repair Part!

TMNT Party Wagon NES

Introducing the 'TMNT Party Wagon NES'! A fully functioning Nintendo built into a TMNT Turtle Van toy.

The first in the world  
A month's worth of work, a lot of R&D, countless hours of cutting, sanding, wiring, gluing, action figure modifying, and more went into this one-of-a-kind Nintendo Entertainment System.
The head lights and passenger compartment light up, the guns, radar, and armored windshield are moveable and removable, new 'glass' windows, new steering wheel, and more.
The power and audio/video cables plug into jacks mounted on the back of the van. The POWER and RESET buttons are located on top just in front of the TOP LOADING cart slot. The controller ports are built into the side door.
Leonardo is at the wheel while Michelangelo eats pizza and plays with his nunchucku sitting shotgun.
Matching custom painted controllers with unique overlays mimic the design and color palette of the van. The paint is all professional automotive base coat clear coat system. The clear coat was color sanded and buffed just like you would do on a show car!

PSIO Update

Well its been almost two years since we last checked in on the PSIO project.  The PSIO is for the original Sony Playstation 1 that allows the user to access homebrew, boot and run code straight from a cartridge with a SD slot.  As excited as I am to hear about any project at this level, a red flag came up for me here.  Upon further investigation my fears became true.  You see the PS had a good and very long run with several generational releases.  The PSIO website states in its FAQ that the prototype cartridge plugs into the parallel I/O port.  If my memory serves correctly this was only included in the first generation of PlayStations. In the years past this unique feature has made them more valuable than even the slim PS1 that looked almost as small as a handheld.  However, all is not lost since there are currently plans to PSIO cards for later generations.  Since these newer models have no PIO port they will require some 17 bits of soldering.

I was fortunate enough to have a wise friend who saw a first gen PS along side an import chip in a long gone video game store for playing Japanese PS games (Dragonball Z was really new and cool back then).  This friend also saw then hidden value of playing boot-able code like homebrew as well and convinced me to get one.  I still have that same PS from many moons year ago and it still rocks.  The PSIO's main goal is to bring that same idea into the modern age by adding SD, presumably FAT-32 format, to the PlayStation hardware.  Why you ask?  Two big reason are that CD drives do fail and even the CD's themselves begin to degrade around ten years.  The unit boasts several features like a Virtual Memory Card, multi-region support, hexadecimal editor (gameshark), and a bit more.  Development continues as the creator(s) periodically post updates that can be found on the link above.  We'll be keeping a watch on this project.

Replacing Playstaion 2 Laser

Greetings programs!  Today's experiment is replacing the laser in a PlayStation 2 Slim unit aka SCPH-75001 NTSC.  Why?  Because it went from getting picky about the games it loaded to intermediately loading certain games to not even even trying to spin the disk.  I knew this had to mean that either the motor had died or the laser no longer functioned at all.  Because of the finickiness before I bet my money on the laser, or about eight bucks from Ebay.   Replacement laser part name is PVR-802 (KHM-430).  Now some people argue that simply buying another PS2 for an extra twenty bucks is a way better idea.  Those people are idiots who need to leave the building right now...I'll wait....okay we good?  So other than a new laser you'll need some jeweler Phillips head screwdrivers, some de-solder braid and a soldering iron.  This whole project took about 30 minutes but really can be done in about ten minutes or less.  Start of course by removing the screws and cover from the unit.  Make sure you're new laser has the protection circuit de-soldered before installation!!!
